Can you ride a motorcycle in Spain with a UK licence? Yes — your UK licence is valid in Spain for short stays, but you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) for Morocco and for rentals. Here’s everything UK riders need to know before joining a tour or renting a Triumph from Málaga.

Is a UK motorcycle licence valid in Spain?
Yes. Your UK motorcycle licence is fully recognised in Spain for tourist visits and short stays. Spain accepts UK licences under the bilateral agreement following Brexit, so you can ride legally without any additional paperwork for stays of up to 6 months.
However, there are two things to keep in mind:
- If you plan to rent a motorcycle in Spain, most rental companies — including us — require an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your UK licence. This is a legal requirement for non-EU citizens renting vehicles.
- If you plan to cross into Morocco, an IDP is mandatory at the border. Without it, you will not be allowed to enter.
Do you need an IDP to ride in Spain?
For riding your own motorcycle on Spanish roads, technically no — your UK licence is enough for short tourist stays. But for renting a motorcycle or joining an organised tour, yes — an IDP is required.
The IDP is an official translation of your driving licence recognised internationally. You can get one in the UK from the AA or RAC for around £5.50. It takes just a few minutes to apply online and is valid for 12 months.
Our recommendation: get the IDP before you travel. It costs almost nothing, takes minutes, and avoids any risk of being turned away at a rental desk or border crossing.
Can UK riders join a Morocco motorcycle tour?
Yes — and UK riders are some of our most frequent guests on the Morocco guided motorcycle tour. The requirements are straightforward:
| Document | Required? | Notes |
| UK motorcycle licence (A or A2) | ✅ Yes | Original document, not a copy |
| International Driving Permit (IDP) | ✅ Yes | Mandatory at Morocco border |
| Valid passport | ✅ Yes | Minimum 6 months validity |
| International travel insurance | ✅ Yes | Included in our tour packages |
| International motorcycle insurance | ✅ Yes | Included when you rent one of our bikes |
If you bring your own motorcycle to Morocco, you’ll need to arrange your own international motorcycle insurance (Carte Verte). We can advise on this — just contact us before booking.
UK motorcycle licence categories explained
Not all UK licences allow you to ride all motorcycles. Here’s a quick reference:
| Category | Age | Bikes allowed | Triumph models available |
| A2 | 19+ | Up to 35kW (47bhp) | Tiger Sport 660, Scrambler 400 X, Speed 400 |
| A (full) | 21+ (progressive) / 24+ (direct) | Any motorcycle | All models including Tiger 900, Tiger 1200, Scrambler 1200 XE, Tiger Sport 800 |
If you hold an A2 licence, you can still join our tours and rent from us — we’ll match you with a suitable Triumph model. Just let us know your licence category when booking.

Post-Brexit: what changed for UK riders in Spain?
Since Brexit (January 2021), UK driving licences are no longer automatically treated as EU licences. In practice, for riding in Spain as a tourist, the impact is minimal — Spain recognises UK licences for stays under 6 months. The main change is:
- You now need an IDP for rentals and for entering Morocco (this was required before Brexit for non-EU countries too)
- If you plan to live in Spain long-term, you’ll need to exchange your UK licence for a Spanish one within 6 months of becoming a resident — but this doesn’t affect tourists or short-stay visitors
For the purposes of a motorcycle holiday in Spain or Morocco, your UK licence plus IDP covers everything you need.
FAQ
Can I ride in Spain with just my UK licence?
Yes, for tourist visits. For motorcycle rentals and Morocco tours, you also need an IDP.
Where do I get an IDP in the UK?
From the AA or RAC. It costs around £5.50, takes minutes online, and is valid for 12 months.
Does my A2 licence allow me to join your tours?
Yes. We have suitable Triumph models for A2 licence holders — Tiger Sport 660, Scrambler 400 X and Speed 400.
Do I need special insurance to ride in Morocco?
Yes — international motorcycle insurance (Carte Verte) is required at the Morocco border. When you rent one of our bikes, this is included. If you bring your own bike, you need to arrange it separately.
How long can I ride in Spain with a UK licence?
Up to 6 months as a tourist. After that, if you become a Spanish resident, you’ll need to exchange your licence.
