Most riders who come to southern Spain head straight for Ronda. They ride the A-397, tick the famous corners, post the photo. And it is a great road — no argument there. But 200 kilometres east, beyond Granada, there is a landscape that most of them will never see. A desert that looks like it belongs on another continent. Badlands carved by wind and time into formations that glow red at sunset. Dirt tracks that go on for kilometres without a tarmac road in sight.
This is the Gorafe Desert. And for off-road motorcycle riders, it is one of the best-kept secrets in Europe.
The place
What is the Gorafe Desert?
The Gorafe Desert is a semi-arid badlands landscape located in the province of Granada, in eastern Andalusia. It sits at an altitude of roughly 800–1,000 metres above sea level, in the valley of the Gor River, surrounded by the Sierra de Baza mountains to the north and the Negratín reservoir to the south.

What makes it unusual — and unusually good for off-road riding — is the combination of terrain types within a compact area. Red clay badlands with eroded ravines. Rocky riverbeds. Stone plateaux. Gravel tracks connecting isolated farmsteads that have barely changed in a century. And between October and May, temperatures that make riding in full gear genuinely comfortable.
It is not a famous destination. There are no coach tours. No crowds. On a weekday in November you can ride for hours without passing another vehicle. That is exactly the point.
The terrain
Why off-road riders come here specifically
The Gorafe Desert offers a rare combination that is hard to find anywhere else in mainland Europe: genuine technical off-road terrain within two hours of an international airport, in a region with reliable weather and excellent infrastructure.
The tracks here cover multiple surface types that challenge different skills in the same ride:

The Sierra de Baza section adds a proper mountain dimension — climbs through pine forest on loose stone tracks, with views across the desert floor below. The Negratín reservoir, one of the largest in Andalusia at over 50 km², creates a dramatic backdrop for the lower sections of the route.
For riders used to European off-road destinations, the closest comparison is the Bardenas Reales in Navarra — but warmer, more accessible from the south, and with a longer riding season.
The route
The Red Desert Off-Road Tour: Málaga → Granada → Gorafe
Our Red Desert Off-Road Tour is a 3-day, 600km guided experience that connects Triumph Adventure Experience’s base in Málaga with the Gorafe Desert through some of the best on- and off-road terrain in eastern Andalusia.
The structure is deliberate. Day one is the road stage — the ride east from Málaga to Granada, covering the mountain passes north of the city that most riders never find. Day two and three are the off-road core: the badlands of Gorafe, the Sierra de Baza, the tracks along the Negratín. Each night is spent in rural accommodation selected for location rather than stars.
Route summary — Red Desert Off-Road Tour through the Gorafe Desert
The 600km total includes approximately 180km of off-road tracks across the two desert days. Not extreme enduro — but not a gravel road either. You need to be comfortable on dirt, able to handle loose surfaces with some confidence, and prepared to be challenged. If you arrive nervous about off-road and leave wanting more, that is the usual outcome.

Best time to ride
When to go: the Gorafe riding season
The Gorafe Desert has a continental climate moderated by altitude. Summers are hot — July and August regularly exceed 35°C on the desert floor, making full gear uncomfortable and the clay surfaces extremely hard. The riding season runs from October to May, with two clear peak windows:

Autumn (Oct–Nov) 15–22°C on the desert. Post-summer tracks in good condition. Clear skies. The light on the red clay in late afternoon is exceptional. |
Spring (Mar–May) 12–20°C. Wildflowers across the Sierra de Baza. Occasional rain adds grip to the clay — but can make some sections genuinely technical. |

Skill level
What level do you need to ride Gorafe?
Honest answer: intermediate off-road. Not beginner, not expert. The Gorafe terrain is genuinely technical in sections — loose gravel on descents, clay that becomes slippery when damp, rocky riverbeds that require commitment. A rider who has only done road riding or light gravel will find it overwhelming.
What you do not need is competition-level enduro experience. Our certified Triumph instructors have guided riders from intermediate to advanced through this exact terrain hundreds of times. The briefings before each section, the group pace management, and the support vehicle behind you mean you are never in over your head — but you will be challenged.

The spring 2027 edition of the Red Desert Off-Road Tour runs 23–25 April 2027 — the optimal spring window, when the desert is at its best and the Sierra de Baza still has colour from winter rainfall. Triumph-certified guides, support vehicle, rural accommodation, and all the off-road Andalusia can offer in three days.
Groups are kept small by design: minimum 9 riders, maximum 12. When the spots are gone, they are gone.
