This one does not. The first day takes you to El Roc\u00edo \u2014 a white sand village where cars do not enter, horses roam the streets and the Do\u00f1ana National Park begins literally at the end of the main road.<\/p>\n<p>Do\u00f1ana is the most important national park in Western Europe in terms of biodiversity. Over 300 bird species, Iberian lynx, flamingos in the marshlands. From the motorcycle, the road that skirts the park to the north offers views that look like nothing else in Andalusia. Cabo de S\u00e3o Vicente, six kilometres from the village, was for centuries the last known point of land before the ocean \u2014 the place where 15th-century sailors said goodbye to the known world before setting sail into the unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Arriving at Sagres on the motorcycle at the end of day two has something of a ritual about it. The road drops from the Algarve interior through low scrubland and cliffs falling to the Atlantic. The westerly wind is constant. The road climbs the Portuguese Atlantic coast from the south, alternating 50-metre cliffs above the ocean with white sand beaches where the waves arrive from the Azores with nothing to stop them.<\/p>\n<p>The fishing villages that appear every 30 or 40 kilometres \u2014 Aljezur, Odeceixe, Vila Nova de Milfontes \u2014 are the kind that do not appear in mainstream tourist guides but that motorcycle riders know by heart. Caf\u00e9s with chairs on the pavement, fish markets, streets too narrow for a car but perfect for a motorcycle.<\/p>\n<p>Lisbon appears after 328 kilometres. The city of seven hills, the Tagus river, fado, yellow trams and past\u00e9is de nata. It covers almost a third of Portuguese territory and has the lowest population density in Western Europe. What that means on the road is as simple as it is striking: you can ride for hours without passing another vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Day four leaves Lisbon heading inland. As soon as you clear the metropolitan area, the road changes character. The Alentejo plains open up in front of the motorcycle \u2014 endless expanses of cork oaks, vineyards and wheat fields with white villages on the horizon. For a motorcycle, that is exactly what makes it interesting: empty secondary roads through cork oak forest, no tourist signs, no through traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Seville is the penultimate night. A city that deserves more than one night, but that even in a few hours delivers the Santa Cruz quarter, tapas in the Alfalfa neighbourhood and an evening walk along the Guadalquivir riverbank.
