Iván Cervantes is one of the most successful enduro riders in the history of the sport. Five-time Enduro World Champion, a competitive career spanning more than two decades, and a relationship with Triumph that makes him much more than an ambassador — he is a factory rider, product developer, and for the past two editions, the lead guide on our most technically demanding tours.

The Triumph Rewards of Morocco Enduro Tour is the tour where Iván’s presence changes everything. Iván on the Portugal Translusitania: different terrain, same level

The Morocco Enduro is not the only tour where Iván puts his knowledge to work for the group. The Portugal Translusitania Off-Road Tour — seven days through Portugal’s finest off-road terrain — is another setting where his presence changes the experience completely.

In Portugal the motorcycle changes: Tiger 900 GT Pro, Tiger 900 Rally Pro, Tiger 1200 GT Pro or Tiger 1200 Rally Pro depending on the rider’s profile and preference. The terrain changes too — wetter, greener, with tracks through eucalyptus and pine forests, rocky riverbeds with smooth stones and red earth that in spring demands specific technique. Iván knows that terrain with the same depth he knows the Moroccan Atlas.

Portugal has something no other country in Western Europe has. It is not the coastline — there are better coastlines. It is not the mountain roads — there are higher mountains. It is the pace. The traffic that disappears the moment you leave the motorway. The villages of the Alentejo where time seems to have stopped sometime last century. The afternoon light over the plains of cork and olive trees that no photograph ever quite captures.

Portugal by motorcycle is a different experience. And from Málaga, it is one day’s ride away. This is the route we have designed to live it: six days, 1,518 kilometres, two countries and a road that is unlike anything you have ridden before.

The itinerary

Six days, six completely different landscapes

The route does not follow the usual logic of getting from A to B. It leaves Málaga heading west, crosses Andalusia through the heart of Doñana, drops to the southwestern tip of Europe at Sagres, climbs the Atlantic coast to Lisbon, enters the silence of the Alentejo and returns to Spain via Seville. It is a circle with its own narrative — every day the landscape changes completely.

The start nobody expects

Most trips to Portugal head straight for the motorway and the border. This one does not. The first day takes you to El Rocío — a white sand village where cars do not enter, horses roam the streets and the Doñana National Park begins literally at the end of the main road.

Doñana is the most important national park in Western Europe in terms of biodiversity. Over 300 bird species, Iberian lynx, flamingos in the marshlands. From the motorcycle, the road that skirts the park to the north offers views that look like nothing else in Andalusia. It is a start to the trip that sets the right tone for everything that follows.

Sagres

The end of the world by motorcycle

Sagres is literally the southwestern tip of continental Europe. Cabo de São Vicente, six kilometres from the village, was for centuries the last known point of land before the ocean — the place where 15th-century sailors said goodbye to the known world before setting sail into the unknown.

Arriving at Sagres on the motorcycle at the end of day two has something of a ritual about it. The road drops from the Algarve interior through low scrubland and cliffs falling to the Atlantic. The westerly wind is constant. And when you reach the lighthouse and see the ocean stretching endlessly to the horizon, you understand why this place has been a reference point for centuries.

The Atlantic coast

Sagres to Lisbon: 328km of coastline

Day three is the longest of the route and the most cinematic. The road climbs the Portuguese Atlantic coast from the south, alternating 50-metre cliffs above the ocean with white sand beaches where the waves arrive from the Azores with nothing to stop them.

The fishing villages that appear every 30 or 40 kilometres — Aljezur, Odeceixe, Vila Nova de Milfontes — are the kind that do not appear in mainstream tourist guides but that motorcycle riders know by heart. Cafés with chairs on the pavement, fish markets, streets too narrow for a car but perfect for a motorcycle.

Lisbon appears after 328 kilometres. The city of seven hills, the Tagus river, fado, yellow trams and pastéis de nata. One night is not enough for Lisbon — but it is enough to understand why people keep coming back.

The Alentejo

The region that surprises riders most

If there is one region of Portugal that motorcycle riders do not expect and that always ends up being their favourite, it is the Alentejo. It covers almost a third of Portuguese territory and has the lowest population density in Western Europe. What that means on the road is as simple as it is striking: you can ride for hours without passing another vehicle.

Day four leaves Lisbon heading inland. As soon as you clear the metropolitan area, the road changes character. The Alentejo plains open up in front of the motorcycle — endless expanses of cork oaks, vineyards and wheat fields with white villages on the horizon. Moura, the overnight stop, is one of those places that does not appear on mainstream tourist itineraries but has a quiet, authentic beauty that is hard to leave.

The return

Seville before heading home

Day five crosses back into Spain through the sierra roads of Huelva — a stretch that most travellers never ride because it does not connect one tourist point to another. For a motorcycle, that is exactly what makes it interesting: empty secondary roads through cork oak forest, no tourist signs, no through traffic.

Seville is the penultimate night. A city that deserves more than one night, but that even in a few hours delivers the Santa Cruz quarter, tapas in the Alfalfa neighbourhood and an evening walk along the Guadalquivir riverbank. On day six, the final 217-kilometre stage returns the motorcycle to Triumph Adventure Spain in Málaga.

The Pyrenees are not a road. They are four hundred kilometres of mountain range between Spain and France, with more than thirty paved mountain passes, valleys that change language and landscape every twenty kilometres, and tarmac that in some stretches has not seen roadworks since it was first laid. For a motorcycle rider, that is not a problem. That is exactly the plan.

Our Triumph Transpyrenean Tour leaves Barcelona and returns to Barcelona in six days, covering 960 kilometres of the finest riding in the range. But before talking about the tour, it is worth talking about the destination. Because the Pyrenees deserve to be understood before you arrive.

The destination

Why the Pyrenees are the most complete motorcycle destination in Europe

Some motorcycle destinations have good roads. Others have everything — roads, scenery, culture, varied terrain, food, and the possibility of crossing a border without the tarmac changing beneath your wheels. The Pyrenees are the latter.

The range forms the natural border between Spain and France for over 400 kilometres, from the Basque Country to Catalonia. On the Spanish side, the Pyrenees contain the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park — declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and the Valle de Arán, a geographically unique enclave with an Atlantic climate in the heart of Mediterranean mountain country. On the French side, the Tour de France passes. And in between, Andorra.

Furthermore, the combination of slopes is unique: the southern face is drier and warmer, with roads that wind through limestone gorges. The northern face is green and humid, with beech forests and passes that drop into French valleys. Two completely different worlds, rideable in a single day.

The passes

The mountain passes you cannot miss

A mountain pass in the Pyrenees is not the same as one in the Alps. Here the road is narrower, the scenery wilder, and the traffic practically non-existent on weekdays. And the history, in some cases, is of epic proportions.

Col du Tourmalet — 2,115m

The most famous pass in the Tour de France, included in the race route 84 times — more than any other climb. It stands at 2,115 metres and runs for 19km from Luz-Saint-Sauveur, with an average gradient of 7.4%. Riding the Tourmalet on a motorcycle is a different experience to climbing it on a bicycle — without the physical effort, the mind is free to take in the scenery, the corners and the silence between them.

Port de la Bonaigua — 2,072m

In the heart of the Valle de Arán, the C-28 road climbs to the Port de la Bonaigua at 2,072 metres. It is one of the most spectacular passes in the Catalan Pyrenees: the ascent from the south crosses pine forest and opens onto a summit with views over the Valle de Arán that on clear days reach France. The descent towards Baqueira-Beret follows the Garonne river from its source.

Puerto de Portalet — 1,794m

A border pass between Spain and France in the Aragonese Pyrenees, sitting at 1,794 metres. The approach from the Spanish side, through the Valle de Tena, is one of those stretches that appears on lists of the world’s best riding roads: the A-136 winds through a vertical limestone gorge all the way to the summit where Spain and France share a few metres of tarmac.

Col d’Aubisque — 1,709m

With 47 appearances in the Tour de France, the Col d’Aubisque is the second most visited mountain in the race’s history. The road connecting the Aubisque to the Tourmalet — the famous Cirque des Géants — is one of the most legendary motorcycle routes in Europe. Two mythical passes linked by a high-altitude road that in July can have snow on both sides of the tarmac.

The routes

Three routes for riding the Pyrenees by motorcycle

The Transpyrenean: Barcelona to San Sebastián

The most epic route. Over 800 kilometres between Barcelona on the Catalan coast and San Sebastián in the Basque Country, through the natural wonders of the Pyrenees and charming towns like Sort, Bielsa and Riglos. This is the route of 30 passes — or more, depending on the line you choose. It needs between 6 and 8 days to ride properly. There is no hurry in the Pyrenees.

The Catalan Pyrenees: Barcelona to the Valle de Arán

The most accessible route from our Barcelona base. It heads north on the C-16, climbs to the Cadí Tunnel, crosses the Cerdanya valley and climbs into the Valle de Arán via the Bonaigua. Three or four days taking in Puigcerdà, Sort, Esterri d’Àneu and the Valle de Arán — one of the most singular corners of the Iberian Peninsula, with its own language (Aranese) and a climate that fits no conventional weather map.

The Aragonese Pyrenees: Ordesa and the central passes

The wildest option. The Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounds the access roads with vertical rock walls over 1,000 metres high. The Añisclo Canyon, the Ordesa Canyon, the Puerto de Cotefablo, the Puerto de Biescas. None of these names appear in mass tourism brochures. All of them appear in conversations between riders who have done them.

When is the best time to ride the Pyrenees by motorcycle?
September and October are the best months — no tourists, autumn colours and empty roads. May and June are also excellent, with passes freshly reopened and the landscape at its greenest. July and August are rideable but busier in the valleys. High passes close between November and April due to snow.

How many days do I need to ride the Pyrenees by motorcycle?
For a complete end-to-end route (the Transpyrenean, over 800km), allow 6 to 8 days. For the Catalan or Aragonese Pyrenees independently, 3 or 4 days are sufficient. Our Triumph Transpyrenean Tour covers 960km in 6 days departing from Barcelona.

What is the highest paved mountain pass in the Pyrenees?
The highest paved pass in the Pyrenees is the Port d’Envalira in Andorra, at 2,408 metres. Can I cross into France during a Pyrenees motorcycle route?

Before booking, make sure your driving licence covers the bikes in our fleet. In Spain, the requirements are as follows:

If your licence was issued outside the European Union, you will also need an International Driving Permit. If you are unsure whether your licence is valid for a specific model, contact us before booking — we confirm within minutes.

Arrive at our Málaga base

Our base is in Alhaurín de la Torre, 15 minutes from Málaga Airport. If you are flying in, we offer a transfer service from the terminal — confirm it at the time of booking and we will meet you at arrivals.

The bike leaves ready to go: cases fitted, tank full, paperwork in order. If you have added a GPS, it will be configured with points of interest for your route. If you need any last-minute road recommendations, the team provides them on the spot.

There is one question we get asked constantly at Triumph Adventure Spain: “How many days do I need for a good ride from Málaga?” The honest answer is: it depends on what you want to experience. Three days are enough to make it worthwhile. Fifteen, on the other hand, will take you to another continent and back, with a head full of kilometres and boots full of dust.

Málaga is the perfect starting point. Fifteen minutes from the airport, at the geographical heart of the southern peninsula, with all of Andalusia to the north, the Atlantic to the west, the Mediterranean to the south, and Morocco just 35 kilometres away by ferry. Few cities in Europe can offer that kind of riding CV.

Below, the destinations we recommend based on how many days you have.

3 days

Ronda and the Serranía: the classic that never disappoints

Three days is the minimum to leave Málaga and come back with something real. And with that time, the Serranía de Ronda is the most complete option available.

The A-397 between San Pedro de Alcántara and Ronda has 365 documented corners in 30 kilometres. It climbs from sea level to 780 metres without losing rhythm. It is also the most famous motorcycle road in southern Spain, and for good reason: the tarmac is exceptional, the layout is technical without being aggressive, and the views over the coast as you climb are the kind that stay with you.

From Ronda, the second day takes you into the Sierra de Grazalema via the CA-9104 — 17 kilometres of mountain pass climbing to the Puerto de las Palomas at 1,180 metres, surrounded by whitewashed villages stacked on cliff edges. For the third day, the return to Málaga through the interior, via Antequera or down the A-366 through the Guadalhorce valley, closes the loop naturally.

Eastern Andalusia: Sierra Nevada, Tabernas and the Almería coast

If you have five days, you can ride the circuit that Rich and Ewa did with us — Granada, Sierra Nevada, the Tabernas Desert and the Almería coast — and return to Málaga feeling like you have crossed four completely different landscapes without leaving Andalusia.

The A-395 climbs into Sierra Nevada to 2,500 metres — the highest paved road in Europe. From the top, on a clear day, you can see both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Furthermore, dropping down the other side into the Alpujarras, with their Moorish villages tucked into the ravine walls, is one of those stretches you do not expect and do not forget.

On the other hand, the Tabernas Desert in Almería — the only semi-arid desert in continental Europe — is another landscape that breaks every assumption about what you can find in Spain. These are the same locations where Sergio Leone filmed the Spaghetti Westerns. A light and a silence with no equivalent anywhere else on the peninsula.

Full Andalusia: from Málaga to Tarifa via Sevilla and Córdoba

A week is enough to cross Andalusia from east to west and reach the southernmost point of continental Europe. Tarifa, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic and from the shore you can see Africa just 14 kilometres away.

The classic itinerary leaves Málaga towards Granada on day one, climbs Sierra Nevada, drops down into Jaén — the olive oil province, with secondary roads running between groves that stretch as far as you can see — and continues towards Córdoba and Sevilla. The return through Cádiz, Jerez and the Costa de la Luz to Tarifa closes a loop that covers practically the entire geography and culture of the southern peninsula.

It is no coincidence that this is the tour our European clients repeat most often. Seven days, approximately 1,300 kilometres, and the feeling that Andalusia is far bigger than it looked on the map.

Portugal by motorcycle: from Andalusia to Lisbon and the Atlantic coast

From ten days onwards, crossing the border into Portugal becomes possible. Not to pass through — to ride it properly. The Portuguese N2, the longest road in the country at 738 kilometres from north to south, is one of the great motorcycle routes of the Iberian Peninsula that has not yet been overrun.

From Málaga the Portuguese border is a long day’s ride through Huelva and the marshes of the Doñana National Park. The return, moreover, can be through the interior or along the coast — depending on what you still want to see.

Two weeks. Enough time to take the ferry from Tarifa or Algeciras, cross the Strait of Gibraltar in 35 minutes, and ride Morocco from north to south. Chefchaouen, the Atlas, the Sahara desert, Marrakech. And come back.

How many days do I need for a motorcycle route from Málaga?
The Serranía de Ronda and Sierra de Grazalema can be done as a complete circuit in 3 days (approx. 400km). Eastern Andalusia with Sierra Nevada and Tabernas works well over 5 days. A full week allows you to cross all of Andalusia to Tarifa. If Portugal is the goal, allow at least 10 days. To reach Morocco and ride it properly, 15 days is the ideal window, crossing by ferry from Tarifa or Algeciras.

What is the best time of year to ride from Málaga?
October to May is the optimal riding season in southern Spain. Temperatures range between 12 and 22°C, roads are in their best condition, and mountain route traffic is minimal on weekdays. July and August are rideable on the coast, although inland temperatures can exceed 40°C.

Most riders who come to southern Spain head straight for Ronda. They ride the A-397, tick the famous corners, post the photo. And it is a great road — no argument there. But 200 kilometres east, beyond Granada, there is a landscape that most of them will never see. A desert that looks like it belongs on another continent. Badlands carved by wind and time into formations that glow red at sunset. Dirt tracks that go on for kilometres without a tarmac road in sight.

This is the Gorafe Desert. And for off-road motorcycle riders, it is one of the best-kept secrets in Europe.

The place

What is the Gorafe Desert?

The Gorafe Desert is a semi-arid badlands landscape located in the province of Granada, in eastern Andalusia. It sits at an altitude of roughly 800–1,000 metres above sea level, in the valley of the Gor River, surrounded by the Sierra de Baza mountains to the north and the Negratín reservoir to the south.

What makes it unusual — and unusually good for off-road riding — is the combination of terrain types within a compact area. Red clay badlands with eroded ravines. Rocky riverbeds. Stone plateaux. Gravel tracks connecting isolated farmsteads that have barely changed in a century. And between October and May, temperatures that make riding in full gear genuinely comfortable.

It is not a famous destination. There are no coach tours. No crowds. On a weekday in November you can ride for hours without passing another vehicle. That is exactly the point.

The Gorafe Desert offers a rare combination that is hard to find anywhere else in mainland Europe: genuine technical off-road terrain within two hours of an international airport, in a region with reliable weather and excellent infrastructure.

Our Red Desert Off-Road Tour is a 3-day, 600km guided experience that connects Triumph Adventure Experience’s base in Málaga with the Gorafe Desert through some of the best on- and off-road terrain in eastern Andalusia.

The structure is deliberate. Day one is the road stage — the ride east from Málaga to Granada, covering the mountain passes north of the city that most riders never find. Day two and three are the off-road core: the badlands of Gorafe, the Sierra de Baza, the tracks along the Negratín. Each night is spent in rural accommodation selected for location rather than stars.

The 600km total includes approximately 180km of off-road tracks across the two desert days. Not extreme enduro — but not a gravel road either. You need to be comfortable on dirt, able to handle loose surfaces with some confidence, and prepared to be challenged. When to go: the Gorafe riding season

The Gorafe Desert has a continental climate moderated by altitude. Summers are hot — July and August regularly exceed 35°C on the desert floor, making full gear uncomfortable and the clay surfaces extremely hard. The riding season runs from October to May, with two clear peak windows:

Honest answer: intermediate off-road. Not beginner, not expert. The Gorafe terrain is genuinely technical in sections — loose gravel on descents, clay that becomes slippery when damp, rocky riverbeds that require commitment. What is the best time of year for a motorcycle tour in southern Spain?
October to May is the optimal riding season in Andalusia. Temperatures average 15–22°C, roads are clear, and the landscape is at its best. July and August can exceed 40°C inland — rideable but uncomfortable in full gear. The spring window (March–May) adds wildflowers across the sierras; autumn (October–November) offers exceptional light and emptier roads.

Do I need my own motorcycle for a self-guided tour in Andalusia?
No. Triumph Adventure Spain provides the motorcycle as part of the self-guided tour package. The fleet includes Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro, Tiger 900 Rally Pro, Tiger 1200 Rally Pro, Scrambler 900, and Scrambler 1200 XE. Side cases and top box are included at no extra cost. You need a valid Class A or A2 motorcycle licence.

What are the best motorcycle roads in southern Spain?
The A-397 between San Pedro de Alcántara and Ronda (365 corners, 30km) is the most famous. The CA-9104 through the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park is technically demanding and visually spectacular. The A-395 into Sierra Nevada reaches the highest paved road in Europe at 2,500m. The desert roads around Tabernas in Almería offer a completely different riding experience — flat, fast, and otherworldly.

How far is the Triumph Adventure Spain base from Málaga Airport?
15 minutes by car. The base is located in Alhaurín de la Torre, Málaga. Airport transfer is available on request. Most riders fly in, pick up the bike the same afternoon, and start riding the following morning.

What is the difference between a self-guided and a guided motorcycle tour in Andalusia?
On a self-guided tour you ride independently — no guide accompanies you, but the route, hotels, and support are fully organised in advance. You set the pace, choose your stops, and ride on your own schedule. On a guided tour, a certified Triumph instructor leads the group, with a maximum of 12 riders and a support vehicle. Self-guided suits independent riders who want logistics handled; guided suits those who want coaching, group dynamics, and the expertise of the instructor on the road.

All the clients who come on our tours leave a little piece of themselves in our offices, but only a few have managed to make us completely change the way we experience life.

That was the case with Lee.

Lee came into our lives with a group traveling to the Pyrenees, in one of the Off-Road editions we launched some time ago. He was accompanied by a friend, both radiating a kind of charisma you can sense from afar, bonding with everyone in the group—and the team members were no exception.

Although people who join our tours are usually very kind, sometimes we come across individuals who stand out—those who give their all at every moment, who enjoy and appreciate every detail, and whose attitude toward adventure leaves no one indifferent.

Life’s twists and turns

During the tour days, it’s normal for clients to build strong connections, as it’s a very social activity where people spend a lot of time together during meals, breaks, and more.

That’s when the question came up, and during one of the dinners I dared to ask: how do you manage to radiate so much happiness and energy all the time?

Lee had a clear answer. He told us how, sometimes, life doesn’t give you the easiest circumstances, and when you have to face situations you never imagined with people you love, the problems that once had the power to ruin your day begin to lose their importance.

From that moment on, he realized that you can’t control or choose the bad things that happen to you—but you can control your attitude toward them, and learn to truly value the chance to enjoy activities, experiences, and people more than ever before.

No one added anything else—perhaps because it made all of us reflect.

In any case, his words resonated with the group, and his energy spread, creating a unique atmosphere of positivity that brought us all together for the rest of the journey.

Returning to where you’re happy

It was clear that his warmth made both our instructors and office team become friends with Lee, but we never imagined he would join us on so many adventures.

The Off-Road experience didn’t stop in the Pyrenees—he also joined our Portugal tour, the Translusitania Off-Road Tour, the On-Road trip to Morocco, and one of our Andalusia tours—becoming one of the clients who has traveled with us the most.

Morocco is a constant interplay of contrasts that awaken the senses from the very first moment.

From the infinite golden desert, where sunlight paints the dunes in warm, shifting tones, to the intense greens of oases that emerge in the middle of nowhere.

The Atlas Mountains rise with ochre and reddish hues and snow-capped peaks, while in the medinas chaos comes alive in deep blues, vibrant spices, and fabrics that seem to tell their own stories.

Tangier, the Bride of the North

Our journey begins in the African city closest to Europe: Tangier. A city considered one of the most cosmopolitan in Morocco due to its past as an “international city” administered by several nations, and as the country’s second economic hub.

Tangier is a place where history, myth, and culture intertwine by the sea. Landmarks such as the Caves of Hercules, whose opening resembles the African continent, are tied to the legend of Hercules and the origin of the Strait of Gibraltar.

Its diverse essence is reflected in the mix of languages and in iconic spots like Café Hafa, overlooking the sea and steeped in a bohemian past.

Its medina, influenced by Andalusian heritage, completes its character, summarizing centuries of cultural exchange.

Chefchaouen, the Blue Pearl

It is one of those places that feel almost unreal.

Founded in 1471 as a fortress in the Rif Mountains, its history is marked by the coexistence of cultures, having welcomed Muslims and Jews from the Iberian Peninsula, something still reflected in its Andalusian architecture.

Its distinctive blue color, introduced centuries ago, paints streets and facades, creating a unique atmosphere often associated with spirituality and tranquility. But why blue?

In the 1930s, the Sephardic Jewish community that settled in the city began painting their houses blue, associating the color with the sky, divinity, and concepts such as peace and freedom.

Additionally, the mixture of lime and indigo is believed to help keep homes cooler and repel insects during the hot summers.

Over time, this feature became the city’s visual identity, attracting photographers and travelers from around the world, leading locals to constantly repaint façades to preserve its iconic image.

Fez, the Spiritual Capital of Morocco

Fez, known as the spiritual capital of Morocco, is home to one of the largest and oldest medinas in the world: Fes el-Bali. It is a true labyrinth of more than 9,000 alleyways where cars cannot circulate, and daily life relies on donkeys and mules for transporting goods.

Its narrow streets are filled with artisan workshops, communal ovens, mosques, and specialized souks organized by trade, maintaining a social structure that has barely changed for centuries.

It is also home to one of the great milestones in the history of knowledge: the University of al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri, considered the oldest continuously operating university in the world.

Erfoud, the Gateway to the Sahara

Erfoud, known as the “Gateway to the Sahara,” is a unique city in southeastern Morocco that completely breaks with the country’s traditional aesthetic. Founded during the French colonial period, it has no medina or labyrinthine layout, but rather straight, functional streets reflecting its origin as a military base.

Erfoud is also the threshold to one of North Africa’s most breathtaking landscapes: the Sahara Desert. As you leave the city and the Tafilalet palm grove behind, the environment transforms into an endless expanse of sand, light, and silence.

In this extreme landscape, time seems to dissolve: the heat of the day contrasts with cold nights under a sky filled with stars, creating a sense of total disconnection and raw nature.

Merzouga, the Heart of the Desert

It is the ideal destination for those seeking to experience nomadic life, ride camels across the dunes, and admire some of the clearest, most star-filled skies on Earth.

Beneath the vast dryness of the dunes lies a network of underground aquifers that sustain life in nearby oases. In the past, inhabitants used khettaras, ingenious underground channels that carried water by gravity from the mountains to the desert, allowing palm groves to thrive despite extremely rare rainfall.

A fascinating feature of the dunes of Merzouga is their ability to “sing,” a phenomenon known as the “singing sands.”

When the wind blows with the right intensity or someone slides down a dune, the movement of sand grains produces a deep, vibrating hum that can resemble the sound of an organ or a swarm of bees.

Dades Gorges

Located in Morocco’s High Atlas, these are among the most unique geological formations, with canyons reaching up to 300 meters in height, creating a striking and sometimes narrow landscape.

The Dades Gorges were formed over millions of years through the erosion of the Dades River, which slowly carved through the limestone of the Atlas Mountains.

This natural process, combined with tectonic activity, created a deep and winding canyon where mountains narrow into impressive vertical walls. Water, though now scarcer, remains the sculptor of this landscape connecting the Atlas to desert routes.

The area is also known for unusual rock formations nicknamed “monkey fingers” and for small Berber villages clinging to the valley walls, where life is shaped by traditional agriculture and extreme adaptation to the environment.

Marrakech, the Red City

Why “Red City”? The nickname comes from the characteristic reddish-ochre color of the walls, houses, and buildings of the medina, due to the earth used in their construction.

Marrakech was founded in 1070 by the Almoravid dynasty as a strategic meeting point between desert trade routes and the Atlas Mountains.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Marrakech is how life revolves around Jemaa el-Fnaa square, a place with many faces.

By day, it serves as a bustling meeting point full of stalls and activity; by night, it transforms into an open-air stage filled with food aromas, traditional music, storytellers, and street performers.

This daily transformation makes it a truly unique place, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Casablanca

Casablanca is a city of contrasts between modernity and history. One of its most remarkable landmarks is the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest in the world, built partially over the sea and featuring the tallest minaret in Africa.

Casablanca is Morocco’s great metropolis and the final stop before returning to Tangier.

Its mix of French colonial Art Deco architecture and modern skyscrapers gives it a visual identity very different from the rest of the country.

As the journey’s finale, Casablanca represents the final contrast between tradition and modernity before closing the loop back in the north.
